Dos and Don’ts After Your Keratin Hair Straightening

Our keratin hair straightening treatment is a cost-effective and time-saving solution for those who struggle with particularly frizzy or damaged hair.

Keratin is the protein that naturally occurs in your hair making up between 65-95% of your hair’s structure.

Many of our clients are choosing our Didcot hair salon to provide keratin hair treatment to help boost the sleekness and strength of their hair, reducing the need for it to be straightened every day which could cause a lot of damage.

If you’re new to keratin hair treatments, our friendly hairdressers will talk you through the best way to look after your hair when you have your treatment. Here we have compiled a list of a few dos and don’ts to consider so you know what to expect prior to your appointment.

The Dos

  • Keep your hair dry for 72 hours after your treatment

It is recommended that you avoid getting your hair wet for 72 hours after your appointment with our Didcot hairdressers. This could counteract some of the strengthening and smoothing properties you have just invested in, as the protein needs time to settle in and work its magic.

  • Find the right shampoo

Be sure to choose a shampoo and conditioner that will help you maintain your hair and allow it to remain silky smooth for a longer period of time.

Our hairdressers recommend gentle shampoos with micro keratin that work to progressively enhance your keratin hair straightening treatment.

Try an avoid shampoos that contain sulfates and sodium chloride (salt) as these can deplete natural oils and dissolve the keratin within your treatment.

  • Wash your hair less

Our keratin hair straightening treatments are semi-permanent meaning that over time, they do wash out. The key to maintaining smooth, strong hair is to wash your hair less.

This might be a big change to get used to, but if you really need to freshen up your hair in between washes, there are plenty of high-quality dry shampoos that you can use to avoid getting your hair wet.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t use clarifying shampoos after your keratin treatment

Whilst clarifying shampoos are great for pre-keratin straightening treatments because they help your hair absorb the keratin faster, you should not use them once you’ve had your treatment.

This is because the high pH level of clarifying shampoos are deep cleansing which opens up your hair cuticles. After a treatment, this can cause the keratin to escape quickly causing your hair treatment to fade.

  • Don’t touch your hair too much

Avoid touching your hair as much as you can. Touching your hair often can cause it to get greasier faster which will make you want to wash it more. It could also cause kinking which may ruin the outcome of your keratin straightening treatment.

  • Avoid putting your hair up

Similar to touching it too often, our Didcot hairdressers will tell you not to put your hair up in a ponytail or use hair bobbles, accessories or headbands to keep your hair out of your face as this will leave dents and lines.
